I'm sure everyone realizes that musicians are definied by much more than just their music. When an artist is on stage, there's a lot we pick up on - the music is one aspect, but there's so much more we see and hear that determines our level of enjoyment. And when off-stage, their public actions add another dimension.

Like it or not, it is the whole package that makes a musician what they are. Billy Pettinger, known on stage as Billy The Kid (vocals, guitar), is the kind of artist that exposes a part of her life no matter what she is doing, as long as she's not wearing long sleeves. Like a female Dallas Green, Billy not only has a good on-stage personality with songs that come across as truly personal, but she also exposes a series of tattoos, the most noticeable being her "LOST!" tattoo. "Lost" is a word that Billy has associated with her life, and now uses it as a sort of personal moniker. She has redefined the word to fit her situation, and describes it as a fierce determination to find a way, even when others may have deemed the goal a lost cause. It's one of the things that makes her off-stage life interesting, and you can read more about it on her MySpace page.

Although Billy speaks mostly with confidence, there's a undercurrent of childhood awkwardness in her banter that is more endearing than anything else. Not every song shines on its own, but her expressions and actions help the less exceptional songs along nicely. Her music has been featured in television shows such as Degrassi: The Next GenerationRadio Free Roscoe, and Make Some Noise. She has also done some acting herself recently, a venture which she discusses in her blog.

After the set, Billy quickly packed up her guitar and hopped off stage to attend to the considerable line-up that formed at the merch table. In the past 4 years I'm not sure I've ever seen a line that long occur on a Tuesday night. Impressive. If you tend toward acoustic guitar folk-rock played by an ex-punker, then keep in mind that Billy The Kid will be back in Toronto for Canadian Music Week, playing the urArtist Showcase at The Great Hall on March 12th.
