The Unsigned series prides itself on promoting up-and-coming acts; mixing things up, musically-speaking, by putting different flavoured bands on each bill; giving acts a great live experience (that stage! those lights! the sound!); and then donating all the proceeds to charity. It's hard to go wrong with these nights, and this Friday's edition — the 13th — is as strong as they get. Headliners Dinosaur Bones are gearing up to release their debut album, have just finished up a short US tour, and are headed to Austin, TX, later this month for a bunch of shows during SxSW. Their self-titled EP, released back in 2008, and a more recent 7" project, have established the band as one of this country's finest young rock acts. But rather than take their cue from the happy pop of Born Ruffians, for example, these guys are into a darker sound, like a young Constantines.

Also on stage that night will be Everything All the Time and Make Your Exit. The former features the sexy-smooth vocals of Alanna Stuart; the latter have an ever-growing fanbase for their up-beat indie pop-rock tunes. New drummer Robbie Butcher should be a crowd-pleaser. You'll want to get to the Roundhouse (255 Bremner Blvd) earlier rather than later; the Facebook event (link below) has more than 450 confirmed attendees!

Other Good Bets

If you like your indie music a little more warm and fuzzy — I usually do — then the show you should have your eye on Friday night is local promotion company's No Shame concert at The Garrison (1197 Dundas St. W.). Vancouver's Language-Arts are in town, and will cap off an evening of pop awesomeness which also features Brent Randall's Pinecones and Allie Hughes. The Pinecones have a new disc out; Allie Hughes has an all-star new backing band and is working on her debut album with some seriously talented folks. The hugs and fun get underway at 9:00pm, and will set you back a measly $6 at the door.

For something a little different, check out B.A. Johnston, The Racoon Wedding, and Andrew Vincent at Rancho Relaxo on Friday night (9:00pm, $7).
