Sticky Picks

Sticky staff serve up a few picks for Canadian Music Fest 2011, officially starting March 9th and ending on March 13th.

Canadian Music Fest is the festival portion of Canadian Music Week, an entertainment event that also includes a conference, trade show, awards and a film festival. However, being who we are, we tend to focus on just the live music portion of the week, so a few of us have put together some picks. These lists are by no means exhaustive... in fact, cutting it down to just the few picks each night was difficult. You'll notice that a few of our recommendations overlap. Hint hint. Whether you choose to accept or ignore these suggestions, I recommend you get a wristband, decide on your own picks (feel free to let us know in a comment), and be... be the festival.

While there aren't a ton of shows that stand out to me on CMF's opening night (unless you really, really like Finger Eleven), but Mother Mother at the Phoenix is sure to be a raucous good time, and Gentleman Reg's set at the Gladstone Hotel is a can't miss. You can probably expect new songs from the local singer-songwriter, who is currently working on the follow-up to his 2009 album, Jet Black. Be sure to get there early for Toronto's Rouge and Montreal's Creature as well.

  • Rouge @ Gladstone Hotel, 9:30pm
  • Creature @ Gladstone Hotel, 10:30pm
  • Gentleman Reg @ Gladstone Hotel, 11:30pm

Thursday, March 10

By far the strongest night of CMF, if you're looking to stick to one venue, I'd recommend The Opera House, Sneaky Dee's or the Silver Dollar. Sirius Radio is presenting the stacked showcase at The Opera House, while Audio Blood's showcase features up-and-coming Burlington, ON band Sandman Viper Command, and The Russian Futurists' set at The Silver Dollar is sure to be a highlight of the week. I'm also looking forward to seeing Austra, the new electronic side-project of Toronto's Katie Stelmanis, perform at Wrongbar following a recent string of sold-out shows in Los Angeles and New York City.

  • Little Scream @ The Opera House, 8:00pm
  • Isis @ The Opera House, 9:30pm
  • Sandman Viper Command @ Sneaky Dee's, 11:30pm
  • The Russian Futurists @ Silver Dollar, 12:00am
  • Austra @ Wrongbar

Friday, March 11

If you need proof that Canadian Music Fest celebrates different artists and genres across the country, look no further than the variety of acts and showcases on Friday. My picks include a duo from Vancouver (The Pack A.D.), Edmonton's Hot Panda, hometown heroes The Meligrove Band, and a Haligonian folk-pop singer (Higgs). Diversity indeed.

  • Rebekah Higgs @ Supermarket, 9:00pm
  • The Pack A.D. @ Bovine Sex Club, 10:00pm
  • Hot Panda @ Rancho Relaxo, 11:00pm
  • The Meligrove Band @ Sneaky Dee's, 1:00am
