Jen's $10 (or Less) Concert Pick: Feb 18-24, 2010

The Schomberg Fair

My tastes tend toward folk, pop, and electro, and none of these bands fit into those categories, but this show is a must-attend for me.

The Schomberg Fair
La Casa Muerte, The Diableros, The Magic Hall of Mirrors
Horseshoe Tavern, Toronto
Saturday, February 20, 2010 at 9:00pm, $8.

The night begins with The Magic Hall Of Mirrors, the new project of Jamie Greer, formerly the tambourinist extraordianaire of Windsor's beloved but broken up Golden Hands Before God. Those hardworking heroes of the local rock world, The Diableros, are on second, followed by The Schomberg Fair's intense, whiskey-fueled "speed gospel" in the headlining spot. The night ends with La Casa Muerte, a band at the centre of an ever-expanding group of young, adventurous Toronto musicians. This will be a real celebration, and by all rights the Horseshoe should be buzzing from start to finish.

Other Good Bets

Residencies are sort of a thing this winter, and not just at the Cameron House or the Dakota Tavern. Sandman Viper Command has been performing for free on Tuesday nights this month at C'est What. On February 23 this young Burlington band are joined by a "special guest" band I can't tell you about, but I think you'll like. Doors are 9:00pm. Two other winter residencies come to an end the following night: Gentleman Reg performs at the The Drake Underground w/ Evening Hymns and more "special guests" (Wednesday, February 24, 9:00pm, $10 in advance), and Huron and Ian Blurton's Happy Endings are at the Dakota Tavern w/ B.A. Johnston. Doors are 9:00pm for this one too, and the show will set you back $7.
