Jen's $10 (or Less) Concert Pick: July 29 - August 1, 2010

On Saturday, July 31st, celebrate the release of The Golden Dogs' latest album, Coat of Arms, at The Garrison.

Saturday, July 31st, 2010 at 9:00pm, $10

The Golden Dogs were my favourite Canadian find of this year's NXNE. Now, I know that many of you already know and love this band, but for some reason they'd mostly eluded me prior to this summer. I mean, I'd heard of them before, but hadn't paid any attention to what they were all about. Well, now I certainly am. Their rock-pop tunes and surprisingly energetic live show had me dancing despite my tired feet and general exhaustion. (I had to sit down during the next set I took in that night.) But it was well worth it. I'm keen to see them again, but maybe I'll aim for more dance-friendly footwear.

The band's latest album was just released (yesterday), and the vinyl version is coming on August 10th. And see you at the show on Saturday!

Other Good Bets

A Little Italy indie music (and art, of course) hotspot over the past few years is closing its doors. The Whippersnapper Gallery (587A College St.) is having one final party, though. Say farewell on Thursday, July 29th, with Hellelujah (Daniel Woodhead's new band), The People Of Canada, Gravity Wave, and Boys Who Say No. Doors open at 9:00pm, and it's pay-what-you-can. The event is billed as a "funeral," and owner Luke Correia-Damude (also of Boys Who Say No) asks that guests "dress appropriately." Should be a fun time, despite the bittersweet occasion.

Vying for your patronage on Thursday night is the Brasstronaut show at The Garrison. I've recommended this great Vancouver band before, and here I am doing it again. Support acts include locals Little Girls and Rat Tail. The lineup's not exactly a no-brainer, but trust sponsors Unfamiliar Records to present us with something a little off-kilter. 9:00pm, $10 at the door.

There's plenty more. Leave a comment if I missed your favourite going-out-on-the-cheap option for the next week.
