The Darcys

The Darcys release (finally!) their new 7" / EP at the Horseshoe Tavern on Thursday night. This, and more great shows happening over the next 7 days, all for $10 or less.

It's not quite apt to call The Darcys an up-and-coming act. After all, their 2007 debut album was an impressive outing that earned the band deserved praise. But somehow the group never took off like it might have. In the meantime, the guys have honed their sound, gone on a handful of tours, are more than ready to impress much larger audiences. If you're in the mood for, uh, moody, melodic post-rock with lyrical depth, this is the show for you. Local rockers Germans, All Day Driver (feat. Brett Caswell, Jon Hynes from Hidden CamerasRajiv Thavanathan from Oh No Forest Fires, and drummer Brad Kilpatrick formerly of Holy Fuck), and Buffalo (a new project of former members of Black Hat Brigade) will also perform. Quite the lineup!

The new Darcys 7", called House Built Around Your Voice, includes two songs. Both are available for free download on the band's website. These songs, and the ones appearing on the band's next album, due out in the fall, were produced by Murray Lightburn (The Dears) and mixed by Leon Taheny (Germans, Final Fantasy, Bruce Peninsula).

Other Good Bets

Also on Thursday, promoters Snakes & Ladders bring Boys Who Say No, Teen Tits Wild Wives (formerly Boxes & Bags), and Hut, a side-project of Daniel Lee from Hooded Fang, to the Piston. That's a newer venue on Bloor St. near Ossington (937 Bloor St. W.). Doors are at 9:00pm, with a $5 cover.

Saturday night you've got at least a couple good options: Krupke's album release at El Mocambo and a show in an unknown (to me) spot off an alley off Ossington. The former also features The Ruby Spirit (formerly Sadie May Crash), Fox Jaws, and A Horse & His Boy, all for $8. Be there by 9:45pm to catch the opening act. The other show has Entire Cities in the headline spot, with support from the lovely Strumbellas and the equally awesome (and very cute) Elwins. My, that sounds like a fun bill. As long as I can find the venue . . . The Landsdowne Syndrome, "in the alley behind 102 Ossington." 9:00pm, $5.

Don't complain there's nothing good to do this weekend, eh?
