Paper Lions, who are currently touring across Canada, released a free six-track EP At Long Creek this summer.
Paper Lions first grabbed my attention with a floor bouncing set at Sneaky Dees during NXNE 2011. A year later, they appropriately toned things down and introduced their EP At Long Creek with a peaceful outdoor acoustic set at Live in Bellwoods.
The calm outdoor environment was ideal for the debut of the six-track EP, which has a cheerful sound and flows effortlessly between songs like a relaxing summer breeze. John MacPhee’s sweet vocals perfectly carry the catchy lyrics and strong melodies of the songs, to keep you humming along with a smile on your face from start to finish.
Centering on the theme of friendship and relationships, At Long Creek creates a wistful and nostalgic feel. The first song "Ghostwriters" perfectly sets the tone for the entire album, with smooth harmonies that immediately bring you under the influence of the band’s irresistible charm. The album transitions well between “My Friends”, a toe-tapping song with a steady drum beat, into “Little Liar”, a song with an equally catchy chorus. The band’s popular song "Travelling" begins to wind down the album, before it ends with “Polly Hill” - a somber song that reflects on leaving a small hometown.
It has been a busy and successful year for Paper Lions. Aside from At Long Creek (which has surpassed 10,000 free downloads), the band’s music video for "Travelling" has passed the 2 million views mark on YouTube and this month they are expected to release a documentary about the making of At Long Creek. This is all to get you excited their upcoming sophomore full-length album, which is expected to be released this winter, following their fall tour.
