Referring to Hollerado as an average band would be a wildly inaccurate statement.
For example, when most bands may make plans to tour the U.S., Hollerado makes plans to tour China. When some bands hand out free CDs at their shows, Hollerado hands out digital watches or hand-drawn dixie cups (complete with instructions on how to get a free shot). And that is just couple of first-hand examples that come to mind. So when it comes to packaging their CDs, why would they be any different?
Their debut album, Record In A Bag, was packaged exactly as advertised, in a bag, but not just any bag, it was a baggie full of goodies hand-stuffed by the band members. Now their second album is due out on February 26th and, once again, the packaging is more ambitious than your average CD release. With a signficantly larger first run, this wasn't a effort that the band felt they could do all on their own. Fortunately, Menno Versteeg (vocals, guitar), Jake Boyd (drums), Nixon Boyd (lead guitar), and Dean Baxter (bass) have made a lot of friends along the way and were able to recruit a warehouse full of volunteers to help handpaint the CD and LP covers for first press of White Paint.
It wasn't entirely altruistic behaviour on the part of their friends, though. The band organized a night of fun, including an open bar, fresh made poutine, and musical entertainment by the one and only underpants-clad Serb Superb (a.k.a. Branko Scekic of Dinosaur Bones). We were also treated to a start-to-finish listen of White Paint.
Each handpainted cover is one-of-a-kind, but obviously there is a limited number of albums, so the best way to ensure you get an awesome piece of art all to yourself is to pre-order one from the Hollerado Online Store. If my calculations are correct, you have about a 2.4% chance of receiving a CD cover painting by me and maybe a 0.8% change of getting one of my LP cover creations. Aside from the cool packaging, the music on the album is excellent, so just pre-order, it will be worth it.
