Dreamgirl Whatever is really Nicole Simone and friends, who work together on indie-pop music with a little bit of alternative influences thrown in here and there.

I guess the first thing I need to get out of the way is that Nicole is ridiculously attractive; that never seems to be an attribute that works against a musician, so she has that going for her in a huge way. Somewhat related, over the years, I've learned to at least try to avoid judging musicians on any preconceived ideas I might have before hearing their music. With Nicole, I am connected with her on social networks, and enjoy watching bits of her life (including lots of dog-related content) through Instagram, Vine, and Facebook. For whatever reason, I was expecting quiet singer-songwriter material, so I was more than surprised the first time I heard one of her songs, "Say Your Name". It just wasn't what I thought I was going to hear, and it made me want to see her perform.

So there I was, at a bar in Kensington that I didn't even knew existed, Detour Bar, among a small-yet-dense crowd of her friends and family, watching her float through the gathering greeting everyone personally, and with a notable humbleness. After a quick setup, Dreamgirl Whatever took the stage, Nicole on vocals and her German friend Nico Vetter on guitar and keyboards. Her performance had an certain amount of nervousness hidden in her motions and vocals, and she made some noticeable errors as she progressed through the songs, but when the moment arrived that she got lost in her singing and the music, her vocals broadened and the performance opened up. Either way, she held the attention of the audience the entire time. When she made an effort to ask people to move closer and dance, there was some hesitation in her voice, but even so, a few did move closer and at least one good friend could be seen dancing next to the stage.

While I was moving around the venue trying to find a decent angle in the small space, I started to wonder what it would've felt like to witness early performances of some of the female pop megastars. I believe Nicole in her current incarnation of Dreamgirl Whatever has a foundation of potential even if there's a lot of polishing left to do. She definitely has a couple of the core attributes for success... did I just take photos of a future pop sensation?
