The Toronto indie act offered their latest EP to a basement full of fans, with a little help from Jack Daniels and company.

Bravestation

It seems to be the common consensus that the boys from Bravestation have really come into their own. Of course, they didn't really start out on shaky legs to begin with. From their first self-titled EP in 2010, followed in good time by their 2012 full-length Giants & Dreamers (an album that's become one of this writer's most played albums since it found its way into his hands), they've always had some smart offerings and they've always given us a thousand valid reasons to feature them on the site. And now, with the release of their latest 4-track EP, aptly titled IV, the band is on plenty of tongues once again.

Because we've grown to expect some pretty great things from the band, when we got wind that they'd be debuting that new EP as part of the J.D. Originals Presents series, Sticky stepped up and bullied our way onto the media list good and quick, both to get a view of what we'd expect would be a hell of a show, and because we have an undeniable fear of missing out.

So what came of the night? Well, the act gave us lots of reasons to struggle with saying something about them that we've never said before - and that's a great thing. In the past, Bravestation hasn't provided much in the way of disappointment, and this show wasn't much different. While they started out a little wobbly with the whole "comfortable in front of judging eyes" thing (they hadn't performed for an audience in nearly half a year), they shook that off quick and pulled out a tight 45-minute set featuring all the new sounds, along with a healthy portion of the old, quickly gaining life and engaging an audience that ate up the new tracks they were offered as quickly as they drank up that whiskey from the presenters of the event.

Those new tracks deserve the love they got on this night. They are complex, clean, and bright; they'll make you move and make you toss them on while you barbecue and imbibe, but they're just too big to get lost in those cast-off effortless tracks that become radio hits for fifteen minutes of the summer. Since it was presented to the world last month, there have been plenty of great words written about the new album by plenty of great people. Now, after hearing those same tracks live, we're glad that our words mirror the rest. The English language only gives us so many ways to say thumbs up.
