For the second year in a row, illScarlett headlined a show at the Sound Academy during Canadian Music Week. This year they were joined by a young band called Cardinal Chase who played in direct support.

illScarlett

There were so many things going on during CMW that I had some very tight scheduling on the night of illScarlett. I had been rushing around all day and was a little tense, but when illScarlett hit the stage, it reminded me why I was there. Alex Norman (vocals, guitar) started the the opening song "Take It For Granted" with a huge leap from the top of an amplifier, which set the mood for the entire show. Will Marr (guitar) and Jonny Dee (bass) followed suit with their own high jumps, while Swav Pior (drums) and Anthony Carone (keyboards) filled in the air time with beats and notes.

Like every big show in Toronto, the back corners of the stage were filled with their friends, partying, dancing, and singing along. Aside from their own material, there were a couple of surprise covers blended into the set list. The band performed an abbreviated version of Queen's "Fat Bottom Girls" and cut straight into "1UP!" and then later in the set they ended the gentle and excellent "Freezing" with what turned out to be a sing-along cover of "Forever Young" by Alphaville. The show ended like it started, with Alex flying through the air, this time taking a running stage dive into the crowd with a video camera in hand. Looking forward to seeing that video footage.

At one point, Alex called on the crowd to applaud the security guards at the front who were catching all the crowd surfers, and it was well deserved. I think it was during "Heaters" when the crowd surfers started coming in fast, and just as a security guard managed to put a girl down safely, a guy surfer got shoved forward into the pit, and started to come down head first. The security guy saw him out of the corner of his eye, turned and, just as the guy's head was about 18 inches from the concrete floor, grabbed the guy around his hips. Best save I've ever seen.

Even after photographing this band so many times, it's still excellent watching them perform and seeing the fans react to the show. I also get a kick out of tracking repeat crowd surfers (yes, I'm looking at you surfer girl in the last photo). I left the show in a great mood, and we all headed up to see Paper Lions at the Horseshoe to close out the night.

Cardinal Chase

I'm familiar with Cardinal Chase because I've met the guys in the band a few times, most notably during the filming of illScarlett's "Milkshakes & Razorblades" video. Their music fit in really well with the night. Jake Robertson (vocals, guitar) has a great voice and the band played the stage at the Sound Academy like they were used to playing in front of a huge crowd like that. If you're a fan of illScarlett, you really should check out this young, new band.
