After an afternoon in the sun with Audio Blood, I decided to start my Thursday evening with Boxer The Horse, who I had previously seen open for Said The Whale; and with Jane's Party up right afterward, it made sense to stick around for them as well.
Boxer The Horse
It wasn't that long ago I saw Boxer The Horse open the show for Said The Whale and I was thoroughly impressed with their delivery of original material influenced by Pavement, The Strokes, and The Kinks. Although the upstairs at the El Mocambo has nothing on The Great Hall, their performance was equally interesting. Lots of geeky energy mixed with their skillful musicianship made this set one of the best of the night. Written up as a great moment of NXNE by The Globe and Mail.
Jane's Party
Lots of harmonies and catchy riffs define Jane's Party and their increasingly tighter stage shows. I've really enjoyed the last couple of times I've seen this band, and throughout this early and short set, I made a mental note to try to get out and see them again soon. Lots of potential here, and with some musical exploration and honing, I think this band will have the ability to appeal to much larger crowds.
