If there's one thing Young The Giant made clear while on stage at the Sound Academy, it's that amazing vocals never go out of style.

Young The Giant

When you've got a voice like Sameer Gadhia, two microphones should be considered the minimum required. In fact, the way he handles them, it wouldn't be unfair for me to assume he has a meanful relationship with both of them. His on-stage energy was significant, and although the four other band members are excellent musicians and eye-catching in their own way, they are no real match for the draw of Gadhia.

The Sound Academy is a large venue, and can seem doubly-so when open all the way to the back and sold-out. The crowd was dense near the front and before the band even arrived on stage the bouncers were pulling out a few people who had had enough of being crushed. I spent the majority of the show many yards behind the sound board, and although the sound was suprisingly good back there, it was clear that most of the show's energy was shooting around in the first third of the room. Young The Giant deserved to have every single person that was there, although I'm sure every one of us would have preferred to witness this show at a a more intimate venue.

The stage was dressed up with glowing purple cubes, which added nicely the very decent light-show and the clean look of the stage without the bulky monitor speakers (the band wears in-ear monitors). The set was a well organized sequence of peaks and valleys, with "Cough Syrup" rousing up the fans at about the half way point. Saving the most popular for last, the band ended their encore with "My Body" along with the members of Walk The Moon on stage, causing both the stage and floor to turn into a massive jumping, sing-along party. It was one of the strongest finishes I've seen to a concert this year and was amazingly impressive even from the near the back of the room.

Walk The Moon

Young, energetic, and clearly enjoying playing in front of the very sizable crowd that arrived early, Walk The Moon were fun and played approachable music. All four band members had paint on their faces giving a splash of the 80's to their look. It was good to see the band having a good time on stage, but also off-stage later at the merch booth. Definitely a good showing.
