Produced by Ian Blurton (C'mon, Change Of Heart), the latest full-length from Little Foot Long Foot entitled Oh, Hell has grown on me immensely since being released in June.

Little Foot Long Foot

Fronted by Joan Smith (vocals, guitar) who is backed by Isaac Klein (drums) and Caitlin Dacey (organ), this three-piece plays blues-inspired, dirty hard rock. Originally, the band was just Klein and Smith, but with the not-so-recent addition of Dacey on organ, the band's sound is bolder, and their confidence level on stage matches the firm tone of the music.

The majority of the stage presence is provided by Smith, with her fiery vocals and guitar. Feeding off her own energy, there were a few times when she would back away from the mic and get mentally lost in her own guitar playing exuding hard rock charisma — those moments were a true pleasure to watch. Dacey's organ looks and sounds vintage, and the amazing sounds that she added to the music had a late 60's Deep Purple tone, adding quite a bit of depth to the compositions. Klein's drumming was relentless through songs like "Kickface" as well as while playing the best track on the album "Sell Out While You Can".

The music can be aggressive, but sometimes the song titles are even harsher than the music itself. The titles of the previously mentioned "Kickface" and the song "Eff That" are nothing compared to the name of the track the band chose to close out the set. Announced by Smith using clear, confident pronunciation, we were treated to a searing rendition of "Neko Case Hate Fucks Kurt Cobain", a song that built up through a few verses and ended with the trio radiating everything that represents rock.

Bella Clava

Between sets, Caitlin Dacey moved her equipment from side to centre stage; not only is she the organist for Little Foot Long Foot, she is also the vocals and keys for Bella Clava, backed by Steve Suttie (guitar), Scott Hannigan (bass), and Zack Mykula (drums).

I was first introduced to Bella Clava back in October of 2008 and have kept in touch with them over the past three years, but in all that time, my schedule just never seemed to match up with theirs. I'm glad it finally did because, as you can tell from my review of Little Foot Long Foot, I can get wrapped up in a little hard rock every now and then, and Bella Clava helped feed that need.

On stage, the band came across much more forceful and daring than what I've heard in their past records, a change that is likely the result of working with Ian Blurton on their latest release "Holy Crow". The Lonely Vagabond was in the audience as well, and I think he wrapped up the set fairly well by stating (in his typically enthusiastic form):

"There's nothing quite like a killer package of heavy, epic hard rock. Riding the momentum of their Ian Blurton-produced album "Holy Crow", Bella Clava's live arsenal featured a raw, overdriven sound rooted in blend of fist-pumping classic rock and blues mojo, kicking through blistering energy, grinding guitars, keyboard sweeps, soaring vocals, and plenty of attitude."
