The Horseshoe Tavern was made for nights like this — The Darcys CD release brought together musicians, the music industry, existing fans, and new fans who all packed the venue to capacity to celebrate the success of this great local band.

The Darcys

When I arrived two-hours before The Darcys were scheduled to take the stage, there was already a line-up outside the Horseshoe. In my opinion, the new, self-titled album from The Darcys is brilliant, and the early sold-out crowd just confirmed that I'm not alone in my thinking. Not only does the recorded music show great attention to detail, the mixing is superb.

Starting out the set with a slow build, the band worked their way through a good portion of the new album, including excellent live renditions of "Don't Bleed Me", "House Built Around Your Voice", the amazing "Shaking Down The Old Bones", as well as a very original interpretation of "Home At Last" by Steely Dan.

Although I was so engrossed in the performance that I didn't take much note of the crowd, I was able to sense the good vibes, starting from the women next to me who were in (or possibly on) ecstasy to the quieter patrons who were there to soak in the moody indie-rock. The whole night had that feeling you get before a band starts to really break and fans start to multiply. Truly a fun night with amazing music, good friends, and a great performance.

The Darcys are still offering their album for free, so if you haven't downloaded it yet, now is the time.

Amos The Transparent

Amos The Transparent was clearly there to support The Darcys, plowing through their material in a very tight set. They showcased a number of new songs, but also included a good number of fan favourites. Always fun, always great music — Amos the Transparent continues to be one of my top independent Canadian bands. They have two new EPs being released this year, which you can pick up track-by-track for free if you keep an eye on their website for the location of downloads over the next 7 weeks. Also, they have a full-length release scheduled for February 14, 2012; you can pre-order vinyl starting today, with some packages that include live recordings and merch (they're a great deal).
