Battling wild weather and power failures, Nurses make their way to the Drake stage.

Nurses

A short time ago, experimental indie rockers Nurses stepped on stage at The Drake Underground for a surprisingly small audience. But, whether it was the rainstorm or the power outages that kept people away, the dedicated few that showed were treated to a performance that should never have been missed.

As impressive as the performance was, though, it was likely one of the shortest headlining appearances most there had ever paid to see. Following two supporting acts, the group was on stage for all of thirty minutes, accompanied by a single song encore (a flooring performance of "Caterpillar Playground" that easily outshone the recorded release). With no incidents curbing the set and no curfew seeming close, ticket holders left the venue feeling like they were somehow shorted, without knowing why.

But at least the fans were left wanting more, instead of leaving disappointed, what with Nurses being on top of their game for the quick stint. Opening with the addictive "Fever Dreams", the rich instrumental work and quirky vocals were full and vibrant, setting a precedent that stuck through their thrifty set-list. A highlighting performance of "I've Been Trying To Reach You" stood as a definitive example of the sound that the band would offer on this night – a sound boasting more of a standard indie rock edge than what's normally reflected in the group's recordings. However, although the tunes were played decidedly less experimentally coming from the Drake stage, Nurses' sound never lost the charms that brought the small crowd out to fight the weather in the first place. It's just a shame they were ushered out the door so quickly.

Dominant Legs

In support of Nurses' headlining visit, San Francisco's Dominant Legs took the Drake Underground stage to perform their upbeat indie pop for the small crowd braving the storm in time for their set.

While their set was slightly delayed by a power failure that left the venue in the dark, the group was soon able to pick up their instruments, but gave an unfortunately unenthusiastic performance for the scattered fans on the floor. Of course, with so few ears in the audience and such gloomy weather overhead, it would be hard for anyone have a genuine bounce in their step.
