Two Door Cinema Club and Bombay Bicycle Club team up to keep Toronto dancing.

Two Door Cinema Club

When you gear up to see an upbeat act like Two Door Cinema Club, you expect to find yourself in a lively crowd. But as it turned out, it would have been nearly impossible to overestimate the energy that ended up alighting the crowd at Kool Haus during the group's recent visit to the city.

For their part, Two Door Cinema Club laid everything out to work up the fans and keep the momentum going, but it wouldn't have taken much to energize the kind of audience that spent the intermission singing and dancing to the background music.

Whether or not the attention was easily won, it was well-earned by the group. Contrasting the opening act, their work was performed cleanly and enthusiastically, with their best effort shining in “Something Good Can Work” - an effort that rightly garnered the strongest response from fans, who let loose like there was a DJ on the stage. But even for the most obscure tracks that the band played, the all-ages floor was still alive in waves of dancing from a fan-base spanning a surprising breadth of generations. In a town where showing that sort of energy at a show often borders on taboo, it was a gift to see an audience giving in to the experience and working up a sweat, and a treat to see a band that could raise that kind of spirit.

Bombay Bicycle Club

Even though Two Door Cinema Club was the name at the top of the bill, supporting act Bombay Bicycle Club had no shortage of fans on the floor, with the audience singing and cheering for more than a few features on the set-list.

The group, unfortunately, didn't shine very brightly when stood side-by side with the act they preceded. With their instrumentals sloppy and their sound distorted, they just didn't live up to their recorded work, despite the fact that that very work is fairly light and uncomplicated. Going hand-in hand, nobody on stage looked to feel the fever that was growing on the floor in front of them; however, this lack of pep seemed to go mostly unnoticed by the audience, who responded to the pop-rock set with a contagious energy that was never in danger of dying off.
