Kicking off day two on the main stage (MBNA Stage) at Bluesfest was New York-based Alberta Cross.

Alberta Cross

Considering the time of day, they played to a rather sizable crowd of die hard fans whom greeted the band with a very warm reception. The band played a number of new, unreleased songs that will be coming out on their upcoming full length record due out late 2011 or early 2012. When Alberta Cross finally did dip into songs from their LP Broken Side of Time playing songs like "Old Man Chicago" and "ATX" the crowd response was overwhelming. For a band who's songs never really pick up tempo, Petter Ericson Stakee (vocals, guitar) sure does a fantastic job of keeping the audience in the palm of his hand with his signature vocal stylings and performance.

Alberta Cross (Acoustic Show)

Announced only the day of, Alberta Cross played a free acoustic show, much in the vein of Nirvana's Unplugged inside the Barney Danson Theatre. There wasn't much done in regards to promo for this special intimate show, and with bigwigs like Ben Harper headlining the MBNA Stage at the same time there wasn't much talk about the show either. When Alberta Cross took the stage inside the air conditioned theatre, no more then 50 of us concert-goers were there to witness this special event. Fielding mostly requests because of the nature of the show, Alberta Cross played through a large chunk of their debut LP Broken Side of Time and sure made the evening special to the select few of us that were there to experience this intimate show.

The Roots

What can be said about The Roots that hasn't been said before? The six-piece, Grammy Award winning group, came out with a bang and didn't let the audience lose focus for the entirety of their set. Black Thought (MC) brought an electric energy to his performance showing the Ottawa crowd just what The Roots are all about — bringing clever hip hop to the masses. The energy of the crowd was like none other, becoming almost deafening at moments. Drummer, and arguably most recognizable member of the group, ?uestlove laid down his groove while sporting his own band's The Legendary Roots t-shirt.
