What does it take to stand out amongst the multitude of bands within Toronto's local talent pool?

Is it honest and memorable song writing? An incomparable live show? Matching technicolour sequin jazz hats? Whatever the answer may be, Teenage Kicks surely has it all. Family, friends, and fans were out in full force at the Horseshoe Tavern to celebrate the release of the band’s brand new EP titled Rational Anthems.

An impressively large crowd had gathered and were ready to be entertained as vocalist Peter Van Helvoort launched into "Brooklyn Bridge," the opening track from Rational Anthems. I was immediately struck by Van Helvoort's voice. It's no secret that I'm a sucker for rugged, powerful vocals (think Arkells' Max Kerman, Dan Mangan, etc) and things only got better as the set went on. Energetic and confident, the quartet held nothing back and quickly took complete possession of the stage. It didn't take long to realize that I was in the presence of something incredibly special.

Highlights included "I Get What You Give", from the previously released Shook Our Bones 7" as well as "Hearts Of Darkness," my favourite track from the new EP. With vengeful lyrics like "All my foes are wearing thin / I'll dance on what remains of them" how could you not get into it?! Although Rational Anthems had not been released very far in advance, the crowd seemed to know all the words and gladly sang along with the band throughout their set.

Unfortunately, bassist Jeff Van Helvoort was missing from the action due to a wrist injury, which was revealed to the crowd during a round of highly entertaining stage banter. But, he did provide some backing vocal assistance and could be seen at side-stage for the majority of their set. As the nigh drew to a close, Teenage Kicks showed no signs of tiring. The proof being a brilliant rendition of CCR's "Fortunate Son" during their encore. It couldn't have been a better match for their genuine rock 'n' roll sound.

Teenage Kicks is the band we've all been waiting for. With their undeniable talent, good vibes, and keen ability to craft exceptionally memorable songs, I have no doubt that this is only the beginning for them. If you haven't already, go and grab the Rational Anthems EP. It's available as a free download, so really, there are no excuses not to.
