I was more than excited for Allie Hughes' first theatrical headlining show at The Drake Underground. The themed extravaganza was a nice change from your typical concert experience, which showed Allie as a creative, passionate and unusual performer (and I use "unusual" as a compliment of course).

Allie Hughes

The Drake's setup was different from your typical night. Upon entering, two beautifully adorned queens took our tickets and ushered us in. They also told us where to get the best false eyelashes. If anyone is interested, it's best to buy in bulk.

Every facet of a wedding was included; from votive candles with Allie's name etched down to the drunken uncle (a.k.a. Chris Locke) who started off the ceremonies with a comedic rant, followed by a theatrical performance by Henri Fabergé and the Adorables. After their set, cherubs, a minister and a pink suited man took to the stage with instruments in tow, playing a beautiful overture of Allie's songs, while she traipsed down the aisle.

The moment I met Allie, I knew she was a performer and after hearing her sing it was obvious that she is extremely talented. Although her debut album has yet to be released, the four brilliant songs off her EP were enough to keep everyone more than satisfied. You can hear her opera/classical training in her ability to hit high notes beautifully. Her music is far from stuffy and boring — it's catchy, melodramatic, ethereal, or as she likes to call, "Spaz Pop".

Her ridiculously catchy tune "Not The Stars" sung with Darcy Rego of The Meligrove Band situates young love in Toronto. Once you hear the first chorus you'll be confident enough to belt out the rest with her, just as the crowd did. Allie's betrothed Chad Leonardo Von Galen II played by Sweet Thing's Nick Rose didn't last long at the altar and was ditched after a duet. She also summoned her inner diva and killer pipes as she delivered a wicked cover of "Toxic" to convey her destitute and shattered dreams of matrimony. Guys, girls, drag queens, polygamists and sister wives all know this iconic laudation.

If you missed this performance, be sure to check her out at CMW in March — Allie's weddings are always the talk of the town!

Henri Fabergé and the Adorables

Henri Fabergé and the Adorables, like Allie, are another Toronto band with a certain panache for the theatrical. The musical collective has had many members but always at the helm is Henry Fletcher. By the look of things he seemed to get around too as he had numerous wives vying for his affection. Some of the wives weren't even women, but hairy-chested dudes wearing gowns and babushkas. It was a very fitting start to a night fueled by drama, heartbreak and the absurd.

Dwayne Gretzky

Dwayne Gretzky was enlisted to play the reception, and groom or not, a party would be had. They continued the evening of crowd karaoke with classics from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Bruce Springsteen. Although technically a cover band, these guys have serious musical chops as they also play in The Arkells and Sweet Thing. Owen Carrier (Lead Vocals) with his slicked hair and 50's moves made me wish I had worn my poodle skirt. Allie joined in on a few numbers and the dancing didn't stop till the wee hours.
