Nu Music Nite’s 17th Anniversary show at the Horseshoe Tavern was definitely a cause for celebration, filled with a night of great Canadian talent.
Not only was it the anniversary of the weekly free Tuesday music night, but Dinosaur Bones were celebrating the release of their new EP, Birthright. It was a solid mix of industry professionals, bands, and flat-out music lovers that packed the 'Shoe on a weeknight.
The Balconies
Ottawa’s The Balconies were first up. Made up of siblings Stephen and Jacquie Neville as well as Liam Jaeger, The Balconies seem to be gaining more attention every month, most recently with the win of the second round of Live 88.5’s Big Money Shot. They now get to compete in the finals for a chance to win a ton of money. Their live set was great, with lead singer Jacquie’s always-powerful voice ringing throughout the crowd.
Rah Rah
Next was Regina, Saskatchewan’s Rah Rah. I thought I had heard their name before, but this was my first experience with their music. Despite some early technical complications, it totally won me over. Anytime a violin is involved I tend to swoon, and members Erin Passmore, Marshall Burns, Joel Passmore, Kristina Hedlund, Leif Thorseth, Vanessa Benson, and Dan Crozier did it well, creating a big sound.
Dinosaur Bones
Finally Dinosaur Bones hit the stage, a Toronto five-piece rock band consisting of Ben Fox, Branko Scekic, Dave Wickland, Lucas Fredette, and Josh Byrne. They played all of the songs off of their new Birthright EP, as well as some new ones that they said will be on their full-length album, to be released next year on Dine Alone Records. This band is going on three years now, and it shows in the improved quality of their sound. There were at least a few new stand-out songs.
Monster Truck
I didn't stick around for Monster Truck, but Pete stuck around to snap a few photos before heading home.
