Judging from the material on each band’s Myspace page, I was expecting to go home from this night with a throbbing head and aching feet from too much dancing around to good music. However, Germans missed the mark, and although The Darcys put on a very solid set, it took them until the encore to completely wow me.

The Darcys

Rarely do I go to shows containing free giveaways, but The Darcys showed how rad of a band they are by giving away free copies of their 7"House Built Around Your Voice. It was also a special night for one member in particular, Wes Marskell (drums), as it was his birthday. The band came on stage looking really laid back and surprised me with how well constructed their new songs are. The vocals from Jason Couse were nothing short of amazing as he looked so concentrated on hitting all the right notes, while Marskell kept the time with some incredible and passionate drumming. The songs come across fuller and stronger than in their recorded format, including the excellent "House Built Around Your Voice," in part due to the active guitar work from Mike le Riche.

After a solid set, the band left the stage and Wes came back on to explain that was all they had. It seems they hadn't really planned on playing an encore. The crowd kept cheering, though, so the band members once again took their places. Because their material can be mellow, I was not expecting the encore and final song to be a cover of Sheryl Crow's "If It Makes You Happy" played not just by the band, but with a large group of friends and fans on stage with them, stealing mics and singing the chorus. Great fun to watch and clearly everyone had a blast on stage. It's been three years since The Darcys have come out with a full length record. Judging from their performance, I have a good feeling Young Believers is going to in high rotation once it's out in the fall.

Germans

Ever hear a band on iTunes and think "they'd put on a good show", only to have your expectations tarnished upon arrival? I was sadly late for All Day Driver's set, so it was up to Germans to lift my sad spirits. I had been listening to the band for days prior to the show and was really stoked to see how their music would resonate on stage. However, their set contained a few technical difficulties and what seemed to be uninspired showmanship. Germans have room for improvement there, and will hopefully prove me wrong. Until then, I'll listen to my favourite song "Buffet" (available on their MySpace) on repeat until I see them again sometime.
