Having heard a lot about Young Rival over the last little while, I was excited to finally see them play. And while their set started off rocky due to some microphone volume issues, they came out strong thanks to their exceptional instrumentation.

Young Rival

Consisting of Aron D’Alesio (vocals, guitar), Noah Fralick (drums) and John Smith (bass), Hamilton's Young Rival has a garage punk rock sound that stands out because of their excellent instrument playing. Each member was tight and clean with his part, and put together they sounded great. This being their official CD release party, it was easy to see that they were excited to be on stage and eager to impress the crowd. Young Rival played tons of songs from their debut album, LP, such as "Authentic," "Got What You Need," and "Modern Life." They also played my favourite song, "Your Island," off of their EP, as well as some great covers of Stooges and Everly Brothers songs. Young Rival is heading out on an exciting tour of North America and the UK, with other upcoming Canadian stops including Montreal on May 6, Ottawa on May 7, Kingston on May 8, Vancouver on June 9, Edmonton on June 11, Calgary on June 12, Saskatoon on June 13, and Winnipeg on June 14.

Make Your Exit

Another band from the night that deserves a mention is Toronto’s own Make Your Exit. They were one of three opening bands for the night but they were the only ones I managed to catch. They played a high-energy set that backed their wicked sound. They play locally fairly frequently, and if you haven't made it out to see them yet, keep your eyes open for upcoming show dates.
