Rebel Emergency, The Junction, Elias, and Michou all got together to celebrate Pina The Inside Edge Chick's Birthday at Sound Academy. With a line-up like this, it would be a very Happy Birthday indeed.

Rebel Emergency

The final band of this great evening was Rebel Emergency. This Toronto based Rock/Reggae/Ska band has played tons of shows in the city, and gained a faithful following. "Wander Far Away" from their self-titled 2008 EP warms the crowd up, and "Honest" turns up the tempo and gets lots of feet moving. In an interesting twist, Rebel Emergency plays a cover of "Fans" by Kings of Leon, which is followed by lead singer Roddy Soul inviting the crowd to join him in chugging a beer. This band definitely sets a party vibe, between Roddy's between-song banter with the crowd, or the laid-back, sunshine-infused music produced by Geoff Star (guitar), Yagga Bucci (bass), and Sir Jeremy (drums).

Another interesting cover followed, as fellow indie band Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker's hit single "Hollowpoint Sniper Hyperbole" received Rebel Emergency's reggae influenced touch, to great results! This brought out Roddy's famous surf board, which sent him into the crowd . He must have got slammed by a vicious curl though, because the front of his board broke clean off and he was sent tumbling into the crowd. Thankfully, the crowd was thick enough to catch him and guide him back to the stage. Their set was brought to a close with "Sunriser", a favourite off of Rebel Emergency's album Love Ain't Free, and another cover, this time Neil Young's classic "Keep On Rockin' In The Free World", which received a massive sing along from those in attendance. Quite a fitting end to what was a great night of music and partying!

Catch Rebel Emergency at Lee's Palace on May 18th.

The Junction

Having just seen this band recently, I was curious to see what else they could throw into their live show. This Brampton, Ontario band consisting of Brent Jackson (vocals, guitars), Matt Jameson (bass) and Mike Taylor (drums) quickly fired up their crowd with the energetic "Just Level With Me", which includes a saxophone player joining them on stage. The Junction get the dance floor shaking with the driving drums and jangling guitars of "My Love Was There", the first single off their recent release Another Link In The Chain.

In a not-so-known tribute to Pina, the Birthday Girl for the evening, The Junction perform Pearl Jam's "Hail Hail" (her favourite band). The cover was great, and led into the powerful "No Road". The band's set was completed with a spirited version of "Under The Night Sky", which ended with each member of The Junction pounding on their own drum in unison, all around drummer Mike. A rousing ending to another enjoyable set from The Junction, who will be at The Casbah in Hamilton on May 8th.

Elias

This three piece band from Vancouver, BC combine dark keyboards, powerful rhythms and atmospheric guitars, along with a very intense and enjoyable live show. It took the crowd a couple of songs to get into their set, but when Brain Healy (vocals, piano) launched into his vocal for "Awake Tonight" over Rob Tornroos' (guitar) atmospheric lead guitar, it captured everyone's attention. Once Stefan Tavares (drums) joined in, the band stormed through the song, and the rest of their set ambitiously. The very dynamic songs from their album Lasting Distraction sound even better when delivered with the passion Elias displays on stage. This is evident when their hit single "All We Want" wraps up their set, receiving a large ovation from the now crowded room at Sound Academy. Make sure to catch Elias the next time they are in town!

Michou

It's always a treat when a great band is playing early in the evening at a show. Michou consist of Michael Hargreaves (vocals, guitar), Ryan Frith (bass), Sasha Appler (keys, trumpet), and Stefan Cvetkovic (drums), and play folk-based songs that have a touch of innocence behind them. They have great energy on stage, as displayed during "Eavesdropping" when Sasha runs around the stage clapping and even hits the ground to do a few push-ups. The band frequently involve the crowd in clap-alongs, all while seeming composed and focused as displayed in their performance of "Control" off of their 2008 album Myshkin. But at heart Michou's songs and live show are all about fun, which shines through in "Growing Younger", a standout track from their new album Cardona, featuring a catchy chorus and full band vocals.

Make sure you catch Michou at The Horseshoe Tavern on May 22nd.
