Touring in support of their sophomore album Mind Over Matter, Young the Giant played a sold out show at Kool Haus to a group of young and enthusiastic fans.
Young the Giant
Young the Giant’s single “It’s About Time” could also be a phrase to describe the band’s gradual but steady rise in popularity over the last ten years. Though some might see them as an overnight success, Young the Giant, originally The Jakes, didn’t sign a record label until about five years after they formed. They have also taken their time over the last five years to consistently tour and grow a strong and supportive fan base.
Their sophomore album Mind Over Matter showcases the bands growth over the last few years. While it pulls from their Californian roots, with beachy guitars vibes, and the new singles have the same strong pop-beats as “Cough Syrup” and “My Body”, the overall feel of the new album is stronger with a solid rock edge.
Young the Giant started the set by showcasing the strength of their new material as they easily flew through the three songs that open Mind Over Matter. The rest of the set was a balanced mixture of old and new, and ended with past and current singles “Cough Syrup” and “Crystalized”. The four song encore was the highlight of the night and included “My Apartment”, “Mind of Matter” (which has to be the next single), “My Body” and a cover of “Formidable”, a French song sung by their Montreal-born drummer Francois Comtois.
It was nice to see that The Edge’s support for the band over the last few years hasn’t gone unnoticed. Sammer Gadhia (lead vocals) didn’t speak much during the set but did take a few minutes to thank the station for their continued support.
Three and a half years ago Young the Giant played their first show in Canada opening for Mariana and the Diamonds at The Opera House. I attended the show just to see them and when I spoke with the group after the set they were genuinely surprised to have support in Canada and each member introduced me to the next with a, "she came just to see us!" At that time I don't think they could have ever imagined the support they would receive and the success that was in store for them. They were young, fresh and eager. Now they are young, fresh and confident with a strong and loyal fan base.
