Being new to Fanfarlo, I hadn't heard much about them, so I wasn't sure what to expect with their live music. And while I've been listening to their debut album, Reservoir, pretty heavily lately, it was their concert that really turned me into a fan.

Solidly packing Lee's Palace, the band came on at midnight to a rowdy and excited crowd. Made up of Swedish musician Simon Balthazar (vocals, guitar), Cathy Lucas (violin, keyboards), Leon Beckenham (trumpet, keykeyboards), Justin Finch (bass), and Amos Memon (drums), it wouldn't be completely unfair to compare the sound of this London-based band to Arcade Fire.

Fanfarlo plays a great concert. Three of the members are multi-instrumentalists, regularly switching or picking up instruments to create the varied musical sounds contained in their compositions. Aside from the usual guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards, most of their songs also included a violin and trumpet. Other instruments such as the mandolin, glockespiel, clarinet, and even the melodica added depth to the music. They played many songs from Reservoir, including the anthemic "The Walls Are Coming Down", the cheery "Ghosts", and other favourites like "I'm A Pilot", all of which were met with huge applause. They also played a few cool new songs, so we know the band has been busy writing new material recently.

Mid-show Balthazar declared "we finally made it," referring to how the band was supposed to play in Toronto back in December, but had to cancel because he had his passport stolen. I think all of us at Lee’s were pretty thankful that he managed to acquire a new one.
