Moist makes their come-back appearance with old fans at Sound Academy.

Moist

Moist came on stage to an enthusiastic crowd poised to travel back in time to the late nineties. This was a time before bands went on stage and played with loops and backing tracks; when ipods and cellphones had yet to become popular, when they played music on Much Music, when an alt-rock band could sell millions of records, and when bands could rely on these album sales as a career. The internet was an exclusive affair and Moist, like many other Canadian bands, didn't receive commercial success across the border through a network that now makes it easy for bands to be heard with the digital nature of music.

The Canadian alt-rockers are working on new material and have dusted off their gear for a nine-date tour. Their Toronto date was only the second night of the tour, but you wouldn’t know it  as they showed no rust throughout their hour and half, nineteen song set. On vocals, David Usher owned the mic with his silky croon. He worked the crowd by dancing and jumping around on stage, and he even spent his time performing the song “Breathe” from in the crowd.

The post grunge, alternative sound was support by the curator of fine guitar licks, Mark Makoway. He tore up solos with the greatest of ease. These were solos from a time when bands used play guitar solos, unlike today when bands often play them almost ironically. There also was blasting drums, supportive keys, and grungy bass.

Most of Moist’s songs are about understanding relationships. You would think they’ve figured it out by now, but they still resonate today (this was best felt during the song “Black Heart” with the lyrics “I'm on fire, I'm rottin' to the core, I'm eatin' all your kings and queens, all your sex and your diamonds”).The crowd favourite was the mega-hit “Push” with a sing along to the chorus, and another highlight the angsty energy in “Resurrection” that made the crowd go nuts. At the end of the set, Usher stated they were running on muscle memory and red wine - it was a fitting end to a nostalgic night.

The Beaches

The night started with local she power garage rockers, The Beaches, blasting out tunes to the local crowd. In fact, it was The Beaches playing in The Beaches, the neighbourhood where Sound Academy resides.

The Beaches were a “breakout band” at NXNE and toured with Mother Mother. This night, they brought their own unique blend of big girl alt rock to the room, showing off their youthful energy with each riff. The songs were mostly based on break ups and other boy troubles, but their style of play did not sound like it was coming out of teenagers. The music offered belting vocals, sing along choruses, punchy guitars, and thrashing drums. There were moments of Black Keys and Whites Stripes as these girls channeled hard rock and blues throughout their set.
