Three great acts helped make the season's sweatiest show worth seeing

Sponsorship by corporate brands is nothing new to live shows, but we've seen some of them do it a hell of a lot better than others. These days, Scion is moving the right way, avoiding simply slapping their name on shows with a thin veil, and instead making some real efforts to take part in events that are worth dishing out funds over. Last month's NXNE saw the car brand standing behind what turned out to be one of the best showcases of the festival - Hand Drawn Dracula's 5 year anniversary.

The Toronto-based indie label has offered up a lot to the city's indie music scene over the past half decade, and they stayed true to form in celebrating the occasion by offering up a whopping nine (talented) acts on the bill, including DJ session from Holy Fuck's Graham Walsh. Catching all of those acts proved to be impossible though, since the stifling heat in the un-a/c'd rear of The Garrison had the crowd soaked in sweat by the first few minutes, forcing us away after three of the night's most solid sets.

But, despite the oppressive heat, we were plenty glad to stick around as long as we could. On our arrival, Toronto's Beliefs brought their signature fuzz in no small way, with a load of shoegazy goodness that went surprisingly well with the resignation to the heat, like we were in the thoes of some restless summer dream.

Dusted followed and put on a set that sounded as solid as they ever have, despite Brian Borcherdt spending the much of the set complaining about sound problems that weren't much of a problem at all, and begging for a distortion pedal that most of us didn't think he really needed - maybe that perfectionism can be blamed on the heating getting to his head, too. Those complaints were easy to overlook, though, and the act's musical talent easily stayed in the spotlight of the very dimly-lit stage.

Finally, Tangiers took the stage before our departure, playing their first show in eight years and featuring a huge chunk of material from their debut album from all the way back in 2003. This set was the perfect finale to the sticky night, with the crowd in love and wild, rough and smiling and shaking the room for a set from the reunited act that played as well as if they'd never parted ways.
